GW301 Cellular Gateway Data Connection Options
Roles: Technicians
Last updated: January 2020
The GW301 Cellular Gateway requires a data internet connection to the NextCentury Cloud. This can be Ethernet, WiFi, or using the integrated Cellular Modem.
The GW301 Cellular Gateway allows for easy network setup using the Web Portal or Mobile App.
Using the Integrated Cellular Modem
Cellular Provider and Coverage: The Gateway's Cellular Plan is provided by NextCentury. The SIM port is not accessible and 3rd party plans can not be used at this time.
The Gateway will select between T-Mobile and AT&T networks depending on local coverage.
Enabling the Cellular Connection:
The GW301 has a Cellular connection always available which can be enabled remotely or during setup. The user permission level required to begin a Cellular subscription is set at the company level. If you do not see the option to enable the Cellular, contact an Admin Level User.
The Cellular connection can be enabled in the following ways:
- Using the Web Portal- Property >> Equipment >> Network
- Using the Mobile App- Property >> Equipment >> Network
- Using the Mobile App Direct Connect when near the Gateway
Connecting via Ethernet
Using an Ethernet Connection is typically as simple as connecting the ethernet cable into the Gateway's ethernet jack. The Gateway establishes an outbound connection to the NextCentury Cloud.
Port forwarding is not needed, however, some managed networks may have a Firewall in place which prevents unknown devices from connecting. The Firewall can be configured with an outbound rule allowing the Gateway to connect. The Gateway can be identified by its MAC Address without requiring a static IP on the local network. However, if a static IP is required by the IT Manager, this can be configured using the mobile app Direct Connect feature.
Connecting to a WiFi Network
The Gateway can use a WiFi network for its Cloud Connection. The WiFi network must be secured with a password and cannot have a proxy redirect (evident if terms of service must be agreed to before connecting).
The mobile app Direct Connect feature is used to select the WiFi SSID and enter the password.
Port Forwarding is not needed, however, some managed networks may have a Firewall in place which prevents unknown devices from connecting. Note: Even if the anticipated data connection is Ethernet or WiFi, installing the external Cellular antenna is recommended. It can serve as a backup connection if there is ever a problem with the primary connection.
