Overview
Multi-jet poly water meter in hot and cold models.
Replaced by a newer product
The M201 Series has been replaced by the MJ20 3/4" Water Meter.
The M201 series multi-jet poly meter includes both cold and hot water models. The M201 is NTEP approved for both horizontal and vertical installations. The full 3/4", 30 gpm design makes the M201 an ideal meter for multi-family submetering.
The M201 Series features advanced multi-jet water metering technology and a durable body design, ensuring best-in-class accuracy. It is designed for indoor use only.
Available in both hot (M201CH) and cold (M201C) models, the M201 Series delivers reliable, high-accuracy metering for multi-family and commercial applications. Each meter is rigorously tested to AWWA and NTEP standards, delivering proven accuracy and reliable performance.
The M201's adaptable design allows for horizontal or vertical installation while maintaining accuracy and durability. Its flexibility ensures reliable performance in a variety of property layouts.
The M201 is designed for seamless integration with the NextCentury platform using a TR4 Transceiver. Its dedicated mounting plate secures the TR4 in place, ensuring a stable, optimized installation. This design provides reliable performance while maintaining a compact footprint.

Installation
What's in the box
- M201CH (hot) or M201C (cold) water meter
- Mounting plate for a TR4 Transceiver
Each M201 needs two gaskets, sold separately. See Gaskets below.
Before you install
- Install the meter indoors, with enough clearance for reading, inspection, and eventual replacement.
- Building plumbing must follow local code and prevent backflow, which may include backflow prevention check valves.
- Include a shutoff valve upstream of the meter for future maintenance.
- If the water supply line needs electrical grounding, install an approved bonding jumper.
Install the meter
Shut off the water and remove the old meter
Shut off the water line and carefully remove the spacer tube or existing meter.
Place new gaskets
Place a new gasket in each meter coupling.
Check the line
Make sure the water line is aligned and parallel, with 7.5" (190.5 mm) of space for the meter.
Install the meter in the direction of flow
Water must flow in the direction of the arrows on both sides and the bottom of the meter.
Install it horizontally with the register facing up or 90° from up, or vertically. Stay within 5° of level or vertical. Don't install it horizontally with the register facing down, or at any other angle.
Tighten both ends to a maximum torque of 15 lb·ft, holding the meter steady so it doesn't rotate.
Turn the water back on slowly
Before full flow, let all air out of the piping, then turn the water on gradually to avoid damaging the meter. The meter measures accurately once the air is out and the line is full.
Check every coupling for moisture to confirm a watertight seal.
Connect a TR4 Transceiver (optional)
Mount a TR4 Transceiver on the included plate for remote monitoring. See the TR4 Quick Start Guide for wiring and programming.
Gaskets
- Cold water: EPDM peroxide-cured gaskets are common and typically last 10 to 20 years, depending on water quality (lower chloramine levels usually mean longer life).
- Hot water: EPDM peroxide-cured or fiber gaskets both work, typically lasting 10 years or more. EPDM handles cold and elevated temperatures well; fiber adds rigidity, thermal stability, and torque retention at higher pressures or sustained heat.
Replace gaskets every time
Use new gaskets whenever you install or replace a meter, and any time a coupling is loosened before it's tightened again.
FAQ
A ground jumper may be necessary depending on the type of plumbing and grounding method. Please reach out to support@nextcenturymeters.com for questions related to a specific installation.
Please refer to the M201C Water Meter Installation Guide.
Yes, Both the M201C and M201CH are NTEP Certified and are also approved for use in Boston and New York.
NextCentury recommends installing the M201 water meters with the provided standard poly coupling set. However, if the installer uses brass meter couplings instead, it is important to ensure the following:
- The brass meter coupling should match up exactly with the M201 meter thread - 1" NPSM
- An O-ring washer must be used to provide a leak proof seal
- The brass meter coupling nut should not be over-tightened as to crack the M201 meter body
- The installer should be careful not to cross-thread the brass coupling on the meter body.
The M201 meter series pulse output is a dry contact reed switch closed by a magnet that passes near the switch and is connect to the meter's dial. The source resistance is very low (similar to any relay or contact circuit).
The M201C and M201CH have a max flow rate of 30 gpm vs. the 25 gpm of a standard 5/8" x 3/4" meter.
As an example:
In an apartment with 2 bathrooms, a kitchen and a washing machine hookup nearly all appliances and fixtures would need to be running to approach the flow of the 30gpm maximum for the M201 meters.
As the cost of a 1" meter can be as much as 5 multiples that of a 3/4" meter, the M201 can present significant cost-savings for installations where 30 gpm maximum is acceptable.
The NextCentury M201 family of meters use a reed switch for their pulsing and fall into the category of giving off a "passive pulse" thus allowing the wires to be wired to either terminal of the Transceiver (no polarity).
Yes, either horizontal or vertical orientations are acceptable and conform with the M201 NTEP Certification.
The NextCentury M201 meter, meter coupling and spacer tube are made out of Grivory GV-5H FWA, which has a UL94 HB rating.
