Use this guide in the NextCity Web Portal in your browser. Screenshots were taken in Demo City; the meter and endpoint serial numbers shown are examples only.
Before you begin
Have the following ready:
- Service address
- Location name and premise ID, if your organization uses them
- Meter utility type, class, units, manufacturer, model, meter ID, multiplier, and initial read
- Endpoint (device) serial number, for example an NC5 or X330
- The old meter's final read, when replacing a meter
1. Add a new address or location
- Address: search for and select the service address.
- Name: the resident, account, building, or location name your organization uses.
- Premise ID: the utility's premise or account identifier, if applicable.
- Group Assignment: add the location to a group, if needed.
After adding the location, confirm that the address appears in the Meters list before programming equipment.
2. Program a new meter and endpoint
Selecting a utility type creates the meter right away
Make sure you're at the correct address and that you really mean to add another meter.
- Utility type
- Meter class
- Units
- Manufacturer and model
- Meter ID: the physical meter's serial number or identifier
- Additional meter configuration, when applicable
- Programmed Device: the endpoint serial number
- Multiplier
- Initial meter read
Before leaving the location, reopen the meter and confirm that the Meter ID and Programmed Device serial match the physical equipment. Allow time for the endpoint's first check-in.
3. Replace an existing endpoint only
Use this when the physical meter stays in place and only the endpoint is replaced.
4. Replace an existing meter and endpoint
Use this when both the physical meter and the endpoint are replaced.
Important: don't create a duplicate meter
For a replacement, always open and edit the existing meter. Don't select Add Meter or a utility type such as Water: that creates a second meter and can split photos, notes, alerts, and read history between the old and new records.
Final check
- Correct organization and address
- Correct premise ID
- Correct utility type and units
- Correct meter ID
- Correct endpoint serial
- Correct multiplier and initial read
- Accurate map pin
- Changes saved
- The new endpoint checked in and reported a valid read
If something went wrong
If a duplicate meter was created, or read history looks split after a replacement, stop and contact Next Meters Support before deleting or moving any data.
