Program locations, meters, and endpoints in the web portal

Use this guide in the NextCity Web Portal in your browser. Screenshots were taken in Demo City; the meter and endpoint serial numbers shown are examples only.

Before you begin

Have the following ready:

  • Service address
  • Location name and premise ID, if your organization uses them
  • Meter utility type, class, units, manufacturer, model, meter ID, multiplier, and initial read
  • Endpoint (device) serial number, for example an NC5 or X330
  • The old meter's final read, when replacing a meter

1. Add a new address or location

Open Meters from the left navigation.
Select + in the upper-right corner of the Meters panel.

The Meters page in the NextCity Web Portal, with Meters selected in the left navigation. A map with a cluster of red address pins fills the page, and the Meters panel on the right lists the organization's addresses (street addresses). The + button for adding a location is in the upper-right corner of the Meters panel, next to the Groups tab.

In New Location, fill in the fields:
  • Address: search for and select the service address.
  • Name: the resident, account, building, or location name your organization uses.
  • Premise ID: the utility's premise or account identifier, if applicable.
  • Group Assignment: add the location to a group, if needed.
Check that the map pin is at the correct service location.
Select Add.

The New Location window in the NextCity Web Portal, over the dimmed Meters page. On the left are the Enter Address, Enter Name and Enter Premise ID fields and, under Group Assignment, Add to group. A map is on the right. Cancel is at the bottom left and Add at the bottom right.

After adding the location, confirm that the address appears in the Meters list before programming equipment.

2. Program a new meter and endpoint

From Meters, search for and open the correct address.
Confirm the address and premise ID before continuing.
Select Add Meter.

A location open in the NextCity Web Portal's Meters panel (W Valley Cir, West Warwick, RI in this example), with its pin on the map. Under the address, Residents says No residents added to this location yet, and below that, No meters added to this location yet, with + Add Meter underneath.

Choose the utility type: Water, Cold Water, Hot Water, Gas, Electric, Run Time, or Thermal Usage.

The same location in the Meters panel with Add Meter selected. A list of utility types opens under it: Water, Cold Water, Hot Water, Gas, Electric, Run Time and Thermal Usage.

Selecting a utility type creates the meter right away

Make sure you're at the correct address and that you really mean to add another meter.

On the new meter, select Edit meter.
Enter or check:
  • Utility type
  • Meter class
  • Units
  • Manufacturer and model
  • Meter ID: the physical meter's serial number or identifier
  • Additional meter configuration, when applicable
  • Programmed Device: the endpoint serial number
  • Multiplier
  • Initial meter read
Check the device pin on the map.
Select Save.

The Edit Meter window in the NextCity Web Portal for a new meter. Across the top: Water, Select Meter Class and Gallons. Below are Enter Manufacturer, Enter Model, Meter ID (123456-DEMO in this example), More meter configurations, Programmed Device (the endpoint serial, 6A000000 in this example), Multiplier (1) and Initial Meter Read (0), then NextConnect commands. A map on the right shows the device pin. Delete Meter is at the bottom left and Save at the bottom right.

Before leaving the location, reopen the meter and confirm that the Meter ID and Programmed Device serial match the physical equipment. Allow time for the endpoint's first check-in.

3. Replace an existing endpoint only

Use this when the physical meter stays in place and only the endpoint is replaced.

Important: don't create a duplicate meter

For a replacement, always open and edit the existing meter. Don't select Add Meter or a utility type such as Water: that creates a second meter and can split photos, notes, alerts, and read history between the old and new records.

Open Meters, search for the address, and open the location.
Select the existing meter at that address.
Select Edit meter.
Check the Meter ID before making any changes.
In Programmed Device, remove the old endpoint serial and enter the new one.

The Edit Meter window in the NextCity Web Portal for an existing meter. Programmed Device shows the current endpoint serial (6A000644 in this example), with the date it was programmed and by whom underneath. Water, Select Meter Class and Gallons are across the top, and Save is at the bottom right.

Don't change the Meter ID when the physical meter isn't being replaced.
Update the initial read only if your organization's replacement procedure requires it.
Select Save.
Reopen the meter and check that the new endpoint serial appears. Watch for the first check-in and read.

The same Edit Meter window after the new endpoint serial is entered: Programmed Device now shows 6A000000 in this example, and the Save button at the bottom right is ready to select.

4. Replace an existing meter and endpoint

Use this when both the physical meter and the endpoint are replaced.

Record the old meter's final read and the serial numbers of the old meter and endpoint.
Open the correct address and select the existing meter.
Select Edit meter.
Replace the Meter ID with the new physical meter's ID.
Replace Programmed Device with the new endpoint serial.
Check the meter class, units, manufacturer, model, multiplier, and other meter configuration.
Enter the new meter's initial read.
Check the map pin and select Save.
Reopen the meter, confirm both new serial numbers, and watch for the first check-in and read.

Final check

Check that these are correct:

  • Organization and address
  • Premise ID
  • Utility type and units
  • Meter ID
  • Endpoint serial
  • Multiplier and initial read
  • Map pin location

Then confirm:

  • Your changes are saved.
  • The new endpoint checked in and reported a valid read.

If something went wrong

If a duplicate meter was created, or read history looks split after a replacement, stop and contact Next Meters Support before deleting or moving any data.
