Installation

TR4 Transceiver, front view: a white rectangular box with the NEXT logo in the center and TR4 printed in the lower-left corner.

Install the Transceiver

Program the Transceiver

Program the TR4 in the NextCentury Web Portal or the NCSS mobile app, before installation or on site. Scan the barcode on the TR4 to link it to the unit and meter it reads. See Program a device on a unit.

For Test Connect to work right away, make sure the property's Gateway is programmed and connected to the internet.

Web portal with a property open, on its Details page: a map across the top, then the property's name and address, Property Details and the Property Setup Checklist. In the left menu, under the property name, Program is underlined in red, between Equipment and Reports.

Wire to the Meter

Strip the ends of the meter wires to 3/16" (5 mm).

A meter cable with its outer jacket stripped back and three wires, black, red and green, each with a short length of bare wire at the end.

Insert each wire into the blue terminal connector, which is labeled OUT, IN and GND, as the wiring guide shows for your meter. For a pulse meter (the most common), the red (+) wire goes to IN and the black (-) wire to GND.

TR4 wiring guide for the blue terminal connector, whose three terminals are labeled OUT, IN and GND from top to bottom. Pulse In (marked Most Common): red (+) to IN, black (-) to GND, OUT not used. Elster/Amco: green to OUT, red to IN, black to GND. Sensus / GWF: red to OUT, green to IN, black to GND. Neptune: black to OUT, red to IN, green to GND.

Tighten the screws with a 3 mm slotted or Phillips screwdriver, then attach the connector to the TR4. If the meter is prewired with a 2-pole connector, remove the TR4's 3-pole connector and plug the meter's connector onto the bottom two pins.

Inside the TR4, with the wired blue terminal connector attached at the lower left of the board. The meter cable's red wire is in the middle terminal (IN) and its dark wire in the bottom terminal (GND); the top terminal is empty. The red Test Connect button is at the lower right.

The NCSS mobile app also has an interactive wiring guide.

Check the configuration

Press and hold the red Test Connect button for 5 seconds to enter Configuration Mode. The Meter LED, next to the terminal connector, lights up to show the current setting: red for an encoded meter, blue for a pulse meter.

The TR4 board, with two LEDs outlined in red: the Meter LED, just right of the blue terminal connector, and the RF LED, in the top-right corner above the red Test Connect button.

To change it, tap the Test Connect button to switch between encoded (red) and pulse (blue). After 5 seconds, the setting is accepted.

Meter LED colors: Red Meter LED = Encoded; Blue Meter LED = Pulse. Circular arrows between a red and a blue light show that the setting switches between the two.

Set for encoded, the Meter LED blinks green when the wiring is correct.

Remote Configuration

The Cloud Configuration option in the NCSS web portal allows you to remotely configure your TR4s. This can be done before or after installation.

One unit, on the Equipment page

  1. Select the unit, then Edit Unit.

Web portal unit details window (Building A, unit 101 in this example), on the All Water tab. Edit Unit, in the upper-right corner next to Delete and Notes, is outlined in orange. The window shows the current read (7,430 Gallons, as of 5 hours ago), the Transceiver with its serial number, and the All Water Meter, each with Show More.

  2. In the meter's section, select Show More.
  3. Turn on Cloud Configured, choose Pulse or Encoded, then select Save Unit.

Web portal Edit 101 window, All Water section, after Show More. Fields: Transceiver (BB10A2C4 in this example, with a green check mark), Meter Type (MJ20 - Bronze (x10 Gallons)), Initial Meter Read (IMR) 40, Meter Serial Number, Custom Meter ID and Cloud Configured. The Cloud Configured field and its open list, Pulse and Encoded, are outlined in orange, with Pulse highlighted and a checkbox to the right of the field. Save Unit, at the lower right next to Cancel, is outlined too.

Many devices at once, on the Program page

  1. Select Start Programming. Open the column menu and select Cloud Configured to show that column.

Web portal Program page in programming mode: Save Programming and Cancel at the upper left, then buttons to add and remove buildings, units and meters. The column menu button is outlined in orange and its list is open: Meter ID, IMR, Notes, Accessory Device, Custom ID and Cloud Configured, which is outlined and selected. The table behind it lists Building A, units 101 to 301, All Water and their serial numbers.

  2. In the Cloud Configured column, choose Yes for each device you want to configure, and set the configuration in the Signal Type column. Then select Save Programming.

Web portal Program page table. The Signal Type column is outlined in orange, with Pulse in the first row. The Cloud Configured column is outlined too, with the first row's list open: Yes (selected) and No. The other rows show No. Between them are the Meter ID, Meter (MJ20 - Bronze (x10 Gallons)) and IMR (40) columns.

Cloud Configuration also helps to prevent accidental configuration switches. If the Cloud Configuration option is on and device configuration is changed via the device’s button, the device will quickly return to the correct configuration.

Note: Cloud Configuration is not available for use with GW201s.

Mount the Device

Stick or Screw the included mounting pad onto a surface

Side view of the mounting pad going onto a wall, two ways. Top: the pad's adhesive back pressed onto the wall, with a red arrow pointing toward the wall. Or, bottom: a screw through the pad into a sheetrock anchor in the wall.

Caution

When picking a surface, avoid attaching the device near metal objects that could cause issues with signal quality. Avoid putting them behind water heaters or near heat sources

Test the connection

Tap the red Test Connect button. The RF LED blinks red while the TR4 transmits, then blinks green twice when its Gateway answers.

No green blinks? Make sure the TR4 is programmed to the property and the Gateway is online. If it is, the TR4 may be too far from the Gateway, and a Repeater may be needed. See Troubleshoot a Connection alert.

FAQ

About the TR4

What is the TR4 Transceiver?

The TR4 is a wireless meter Transceiver for indoor installations. It reads a connected meter and sends hourly reads over the two-way NextCentury RF Connect™ network. Featuring Meter+™ technology, a single model works with most pulse meters and virtually all encoded meters.

Which meters does the TR4 work with?

The TR4 pairs with most pulse meters and virtually all encoded meters that use Neptune, Sensus, or AMCO/Elster protocols. One model supports all of these configurations. It connects with 18–22 gauge wire (twisted or solid core).

This includes the NextHydrus and NextHydrus Bulk ultrasonic water meters.

Can the TR4 replace an older NextCentury Transceiver?

Yes. The TR4 is a drop-in replacement for any previous generation of NextCentury Transceiver, and it works with all earlier generations of Repeaters and Gateways.

Do I need a programmer to set up the TR4?

No. The TR4 is configured in the field without an external programmer. See the Installation section on this page for the steps.

Battery and environment

How long does the TR4 battery last?

The TR4 comes with a preinstalled CR18505 battery that lasts up to 10 years. The battery can be replaced in the field.

Can the TR4 be installed outdoors?

No. The TR4 should be installed in an indoor, dry environment, within an operating temperature of -20°C to 60°C (-4°F to 140°F). For outdoor installations, see the TR4-X Transceiver.

Range

What is the wireless range of the TR4?

The TR4 communicates on the 902–928 MHz unlicensed band with a range of up to 45,000 ft in direct line of sight. Walls, floors, and other obstructions reduce the range in real installations.
