Installation

NM4-I water meter seen from above, without its lid: the NEXT METERS logo at the top, HELLO on the display, and a small round light to the left of the display.

Install the meter

Attach meter couplings

Secure couplings set to the water line and place new gaskets in each end.

The coupling parts laid out in a row, from left to right: the brass end of the water line, a curly red arrow pointing left toward it, the black coupling nut, a short red line, the threaded black coupling tailpiece, and a gasket with a red arrow pointing left into the end of the tailpiece. Attach the coupling to the water line and place a new gasket in its end.

Ensure correct spacing

The water line should be parallel and should have a spacing of 7.5"or 190.5 mm.

The two ends of the water line with their black couplings, lined up straight across from each other. A measurement line between the couplings reads 7.5" (190.5 mm), the space the meter needs.

Caution

Spacing should allow for meter without pushing, pulling, or kinking the line.

Secure the NextMeter

Place the NextMeter and tighten both ends to a max torque of 11 ft-lb using a flat jaw or monkey-style wrench.

The NM4-I meter in place in the water line, seen from above, with both threaded ends screwed into the black couplings on the brass pipe ends. The display is blank.

Caution

Do NOT overtighten meter couplings as this may result in the gaskets not forming a proper seal

Pressurize the water line and check for any leaks at both connection points

A round close-up of one end of the meter, where its threaded end screws into the black coupling on the brass water line. A blue water drop under the joint: check both connections for leaks after you turn the water back on.

Verify NextMeter communication

Open the NextMeter register lid. The Meters’s RF LED will blink green when it is able to communicate with its Gateway.

On the left, the NM4-I meter seen from above with the light to the left of its display lit green. Signal waves go from the meter to a Gateway on the right, which sits in front of a cloud: the green light means the meter can communicate with its Gateway.

Note

The NextMeter must be programmed in the NextCentury Cloud and its Gateway must be online in order for it to begin communicating with its Gateway.

Yes, the NextMeter Indoor undergoes NSF testing to ensure quality and safety in compliance with NSF standards.

What units of measurement (UoM) does the NextMeter Indoor support?

The NextMeter Indoor uses gallons as the default unit of measurement but also supports liters. To switch to liters or request a different unit of measure, please contact our Support Team for assistance.

Why is my usage negative?

The NextMeter Indoor is designed to intelligently measure and subtract reverses in water flow (sometimes called “backflow”). If the total amount of reverse flow exceeds the total of normal flow, the meter will display zero (not a negative number). In the event that a meter reaches zero due to net-negative usage, the read will begin incrementing forward as soon as normal flow is detected.

Web portal usage chart for a meter with reverse flow, from Feb 24 to Mar 23 in this example. The blue Meter Read line goes down steadily the whole time, from about 2,295 at the start to about 2,050 at the end, measured on the left axis. Gray Meter Usage bars along the bottom, measured on the right axis (0 to 16), stay small. A light blue band shades the last few days, from about Mar 20.
An example of reverse flow. Due to negative usage cause by reverse flow, the meter read has been decreasing over time.

This feature has been thoughtfully designed as part of our commitment to deliver accurate metering to enable correct billing. Without the ability to account for reverse flow, the same water might be metered multiple times (once upon its initial pass through the meter, and again on any subsequent passes after the reverse flow has been resolved), which wouldn’t allow for fair billing. Accurately accounting for reverse flow maintains fair and accurate billing for utility providers, billing companies, and residents alike.

Note

Even though the NextMeter Indoor can measure reverse flow, proper installation requires the meter to be installed with the arrow on the device pointing in the direction of the normal/expected flow of water.

A round close-up of the side of the NM4-I meter body, under its white lid. A red oval circles the flow direction arrow in the middle of the body, pointing right: install the meter with this arrow pointing the way the water normally flows.
