NextCity Platform Overview

Overview

The municipal water metering platform: city-wide insights, alerts, billing exports, and a resident portal.

NextCity is the municipal water metering platform from Next Meters. It gives water utilities everything they need in one cloud-based platform: go from a city-wide view of consumption down to a single meter's hourly reads in a few clicks, catch leaks and anomalies the moment they start, and give residents a portal that keeps them informed.

  • 60 seconds to install and program a meter
  • 15-minute read resolution
  • End-to-end encryption with device-specific keys, and ISO 27001-certified data security

Built in-house

NextCity's hardware, firmware, and software are developed and maintained by the Next Meters team in Utah, so the platform evolves quickly with feedback from the utilities that use it.

Where to start

NextCity Web Portal

Sign in once, manage every city

  • One login for every city and organization you manage, with instant switching and no need to log out
  • Super-admin views across every connected city
  • Global search by address, CIS ID, meter or device serial number, or a resident's name, email, phone, or account number
  • Role-based access for admins, meter readers, technicians, and residents

See your whole system at a glance

  • City-wide consumption trends, with click-through to any location or meter
  • Hourly, daily, monthly, and yearly usage with period-over-period comparisons
  • Group-level views to compare routes, zones, and districts side by side
  • Insights dashboards plus map and location views

Meters and locations

  • A detail page for every meter and service location, with full read history
  • Device information, including serial number, battery, and communication status
  • GIS mapping with drag-and-drop placement at the exact service point

Trust every read

  • Automatic flags for missed, zero, or out-of-range reads, so issues surface before billing
  • Correct or delete a bad read in place; usage totals recalculate automatically, so dashboards and billing stay accurate
  • Raw reads kept exactly as received from the meter, with timestamps, for a clean audit trail

Alerts

  • Leak, burst, continuous flow, reverse flow, zero usage, freeze, tamper, low battery, and no-communication alerts
  • Thresholds and visibility set at the organization, group, or individual meter level
  • Delivered by text, email, and in the platform
  • Helps surface non-revenue water and recover lost revenue

Reports and billing

  • A flexible report builder with configurable columns, headers, and formats, and dynamic inputs with defaults
  • Build custom reports with the built-in AI agent
  • Schedule reports and deliver them automatically to the right people
  • Billing-ready consumption totals per account, aligned to your billing cycle
  • Exports that match the formats your billing or CIS software already accepts (CSV, TXT, and more), for a smooth switch from a legacy system
  • Meters linked to your existing account and service location IDs, so there's no re-keying

Meter groups

  • Organize meters by route, virtual metering zone, or district
  • The same groups carry through dashboards, alerts, and reports

Resident Portal

A utility-branded, web-based, and mobile-friendly portal that helps residents understand their usage and reduces high-bill calls.

  • Household usage by hour, day, month, and year, with comparisons
  • Residents set their own leak, high-usage, and vacation alerts
  • Two-way messaging between residents and city staff
  • Each city can use its own logo and cover photo

See Add residents and invite them to the resident portal.

NextCity Mobile App

The companion app for field technicians, available for iOS and Android. Use it to activate, program, test, and troubleshoot endpoints on site.

  • Scan for NextCity endpoints, or switch to legacy device scanning for older equipment
  • Activate an NC5 with a magnet swipe and read the meter instantly
  • Test the cellular connection to the cloud
  • Review signal type, meter ID, firmware, battery expectancy, and temperature
  • Program an endpoint to its install address, on an existing or new meter

See Activate and program an NC5 with the NextCity Mobile App.

Grows with You

  • Adopt at your own pace: start with manual reads, move to drive-by, then to fixed-network AMI, with no hardware swap and no platform change
  • Over-the-air updates and full backwards compatibility, so devices already in the ground keep getting better
  • Cloud-based: no servers to install or maintain

FAQ

About NextCity

How often does NextCity record meter reads?

NextCity stores reads at 15-minute resolution, so you can see usage by the hour, day, month, and year.

Can I fix a bad read?

Yes. Open the meter's read history, then edit or delete the corrupt read. Downstream usage recalculates automatically, so dashboards, reports, and billing stay accurate.

Can I manage more than one city?

Yes. One login gives you access to every city and organization you manage. Switch between them without logging out; super admins can view all of them.

Can NextCity match our existing billing file?

Yes. The report builder lets you configure columns, headers, and formats to match what your billing or CIS software already accepts, and schedule the export to run automatically. See Download your billing file and schedule exports.

How are alerts delivered?

By text, email, and in the platform. You can set thresholds and who sees each alert at the organization, group, or individual meter level. See Set up alerts and alert summaries.

Do we need to install any servers?

No. NextCity is cloud-based, with no servers to install or maintain.
